Dog Management Program
WHAT IS A DOG MANAGEMENT PROGRAM?
Dog management is the management of owned, unowned and free roaming dog populations within a community and the management of the risks they pose to the health of the people in a community. This can be sustained through:
1. Dog Demographics - the measurement of the number of dogs in a community to establish a database for record keeping of all dogs and owners, spayed, neutered, vaccinated and dewormed
2. Population Management - Spay and neuter clinics, non-surgical sterilization programs and removal of unwanted and stray dogs through networking with dog rehoming organizations
3. Animal Health and Welfare Policies - policies in which communities choose to oversee the management of the dogs which may include the number of dogs allowed/household or the licensing of dogs to identify ownership
4. Community Engagement - local community members and leaders engaging in the program in order for long term sustainability to have a lasting impact through networking and sharing of ideas
